Rondalla - Alisal Center for the Fine Arts

The concert celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts (ACFA) and marks the one-year anniversary of collaborations between Monterey County Pops! and ACFA which began last October with a workshop and community concert in ACFA's home on North Sanborn Road.  Since that time the ACFA Rondalla, La Rondalla del Centro de Bellas Artes Alisal, has performed on three other occasions with Monterey County Pops!:  a Gratitude Concert in North Salinas in November, a Gratitude Concert in Seaside also in November, and the Memorial Day Concert 2017 on the Monterey City Hall Lawn attended by more than 1,000 people.

The concert will include selections combining the Monterey County Pops! professional musicians with the Alisal Community Arts Network Latin Jazz Orchestra (percussion, trumpets, clarinets, trombones, guitars - 25-35 students) and La Rondalla del Centro de Bellas Artes Alisal (a guitar ensemble of 20-30 students who also sing).  Titles studied and performed will include "Perfume de Gardenias", "Como Imaginar", "Gwendolyne", "Musita", and "Oye Como Va." Monterey County Pops! has worked closely with the instructors at ACFA and created symphonic arrangements that complement the performance by the students.

The Monterey County Pops! will perform "La Virgen de la Macarena" a traditional Spanish melody, "Zacatecas March" from Northern Mexico, and the "Jarabe Tapatio" from Jalisco.  Selections from the region of Oaxaca will include "Canción Mixteca", "Dios Nunca Muere", and "Sones de Pinotepa Nacional."

Modern "pops" selections will include "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder and "Classics of the Big-Band Era."  Classical "pops" will be represented by the "Light Cavalry Overture" of vonSuppé and "Sabre Dance" by Aram Khachaturian.

Beverly Reese Dorcy, Xylophone Soloist

A very special treat on the program will be a performance on the Xylophone by long-time Monterey County Pops! timpanist, Beverly Reese Dorcy of The Golden Age of the Xylophone.  The instrument enjoyed a surge of popularity in America during the early 1900's as it was well suited to the percussive and lively music of the era.  The medley includes Shine on Harvest Moon, Bill Bailey, and Twelfth Street Rag.  Beverly, a Minnesota native, is an active freelance timpanist and percussionist in both the San Diego and San Francisco Bay areas. She has performed with the Marin Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, California Symphony, San Francisco Pocket Opera, West Edge Opera, and San Francisco Golden Gate Park Band, among others, and toured Brazil performing with the San Francisco Women’s Philharmonic. She is in her 18th year with the Monterey County Pops.
