Salute to Veterans 2016
Saturday, November 12, 2016 (7:00pm) at Robert Stanton Theater, King City
Doors open at 6:00pm
Monterey County Pops!, the area’s only provider of free-to-the-public professional concerts, is proud to present its 15-member fully professional Brass & Percussion Ensemble conducted and hosted by Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen. The concert will feature a program of pops, patriotic, and Americana favorites.
Featured soloists included Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian; Monterey County Dance Theatre dancers, (Jan Harkness, Director); student instrumentalists of SOL-O, the Sol Treasures Orchesta, (Daphne Denny, Director); and the Timshel Community Chorus of King City (Celestina Ripley, Director). All of these guest performers will be accompanied by the Monterey County Pops! Brass & Percussion Ensemble.
Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian, will perform a medley of three fiddle tunes: Devil's Dream, Mason's Apron, and Ragtime Annie, as well as the popular Ashokan Farewell from Ken Burns' Civil War series. Laura is a long-time member of the popular local band, Heartstrings, and is a professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey where she teaches simultaneous and consecutive interpretation of Chinese and English.
Monterey County Dance Theatre (MCDT)was originally the Pauline Hall Dance Studio founded by the late Pauline Hall in 1958. Pauline presented the FIRST Nutcracker Ballet in the Salinas Valley and one of the first in California in 1959. Monterey County Dance Theatre proudly continues the legacy of Pauline Hall, retaining The Nutcracker in our repertory for our dancers and our community. We share the same vision that art/dance can flourish anywhere if students and their communities are provided an opportunity to see, to learn, and to participate.
Twenty dancers from MCDT will perform a medley of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "You're a Grand Old Flag.
Student instrumentalists of SOL-O, the Sol Treasures Orchesta, (Daphne Denny, Director) will perform "America the Beautiful", "This Land Is Your Land", and "Ode to Joy."
The Timshel Community Chorus of King City (Celestina Ripley, Director) will perform a special arrangement of "Festival Alleluia" by Roger Emerson.
Other titles to be performed include "Barnum & Bailey's Favorite", "Amazing Grace", "Henry Mancini Medley", and "Semper Fidelis March" by John Philip Sousa.
The concert will open with the presentation of the colors by a military color guard followed by the National Anthem. Service veterans will be honored by the playing of the musical themes of each branch of the armed forces.
This and other free Pops performances are made possible by generous donations, sponsorships, and foundation grants.
