33rd ANNUAL FREE MEMORIAL DAY CONCERTS 

2018 Memorial Day Concerts - "To Remember and Honor"

 

 For the first time in its history, Monterey County Pops! will offer TWO free concerts to the community on Memorial Day.

 

The first will take place at Noon on the lawn in front of Herrmann Hall (the historic Del Monte Hotel) on the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate School.  Long-time Monterey County Pops! Principal Trumpet, David Adams will conduct. The popular local Monterey Peninsula Cypressaires Barbershop Chorus will entertain at 11:15.

The second will be presented at 2:00 p.m. on the Monterey City Hall Great Lawn.  Monterey County Pops! Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen will conduct.  The Cypressaires  will entertain at 1:00 p.m. on the City Hall Lawn.

The NPS performance (noon), sponsored by the US Navy office of Morale, Welfare and Recreation, will begin with the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner and a Medley of Armed Forces Theme Songs.  

 

Conductor David Adams has been the Director of the Foothill Symphonic Winds in Los Altos in since 1993. His professional conducting experience includes three years as the Assistant Conductor of the San Jose Municipal Band. Mr. Adams earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University, where he studied trumpet with Roger Voisin of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Patriotic selections will include the Fanfare for the Common Manby Copland, and George M. Cohan's You're a Grand Old Flag and Yankee Doodle Dandy

The program will also include traditional American songs such as When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and Down By the Riverside.

American marches such as Semper Fidelis by Sousa, Barnum and Bailey's Favorite by Karl L. King, and the Liberty Bell March by Sousa.

American jazz will be represented by Big Brass Blues, Joplin's Easy Winners, Tailgate Ramble, and New York, New York.

The program will conclude this the playing of the Navy Hymn, Taps, and Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever.

The Monterey City Hall Lawn performance(2 p.m.) will present a program of pops, patriotic, and Americana favorites.  

 

Featured soloists include Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian; the young musicians of Orchestra in the Schools; youth vocalist, Mia Pak; narrator, Robert Walton; and the Monterey County Pops!/Palenke Arts Youth Chorus conducted by Juan Sánchez.

Musical highlights will include the traditional Battle Hymn of the Republic, American Salute (based on When Johnny Comes Marching Home) by Morton Gould, and Salute to American Jazz arranged by Sammy Nestico. This medley includes A Night in Tunisia, St. Louis Blues, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), and Birdland.

 

Further patriotic selections include "God Bless America", "The National Anthem", "The Armed Forces Salute", "The Navy Hymn", "Taps", and Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."

 

 

PalenkeCoro2The Palenke Arts Youth Chorus will perform accompanied by the Monterey County Pops! orchestra playing special arrangements written by Dr. Christensen especially for this concert. 

 

Laura Burian5Blue Grass fiddler, Laura Burian, will perform a medley of fiddle tunes including McPherson's Lament and Banish Misfortune.

 

Mia2Mia Pak will sing the National Anthem as well as "God Bless America" and the hit from Moana, “How Far I’ll Go.”  Mia has just finished her Freshman Year at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and will play the role of Hero this Summer in “Much Ado About Nothing” at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Shakespeare Festival.



Walton3bRobert Walton will speak Lincoln's immortal words of the Gettysburg Address accompanied by Randol Alan Bass's composition, A New Birth of Freedom. Walton is a local published author. Barbara Lee of Ezine.com said this of his writing: "Robert Walton’s Dawn Drums, a Civil War historical novel, is nothing short of superb."

Monterey County Pops! will be joined by 40 young musicians from ORCHESTRA IN THE SCHOOLS in performances of Hungarian Air and Dance by Elliot Del Borgo and The Barber of Seville Overture by Rossini. Orchestra in the Schools is directed by James Paoletti, long-time tuba player with the Monterey County Pops!
