Alisal Students Prepare for the Oct. 15 Concert

The Monterey County Pops! is pleased and honored to perform for the first time at the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts in Salinas.  In what is planned as the first of many residencies at the ACFA, 20 professional musicians of Monterey County Pops! will spend the afternoon at the Center rehearsing and interacting with the ACFA students.

The residency will be 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.  Students, parents, families, and friends are invited to observe the rehearsal and the collaboration between the musicians of Monterey County Pops! and the students of ACFA.

The concert will include selections combining the Monterey County Pops! professional musicians with the Alisal Community Arts Network Latin Jazz Orchestra (percussion, trumpets, clarinets, trombones, guitars - 25-35 students) and La Rondalla del Centro de Bellas Artes Alisal (a guitar ensemble of 20-30 students).  Titles studied and performed will include "Perfume de Gardenias", "Como Imaginar", "Musita", "Oye Como Va", and "Fiebre Latino."  Monterey County Pops! has worked closely with the instructors at ACFA and created symphonic arrangements that complement the performance by the students.

Special guests on the concert will be the 25-member "Ballet Folklórico Tapatío" from King City directed by Verenice Amezcua.  Wearing colorful regional costumes, the 25-member group will dance to three traditional Mexican songs, "La Culebra", "Vuela Paloma", and "Jarabe Taptio."  18-year-old Lesley Amezcua will appear as soloist in "Vuela Paloma."  The performance will feature specially crafted arrangement of these traditional songs.

Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen, who taught music for over 30 years at Hartnell College.  Prior to coming to Salinas in 1981, he lived in Mexico City for 10 years performing as the Principal Trombonist of the Mexico City Philharmonic.
