Monterey County Pops!, the area’s only provider of free-to-the-public professional concerts, is proud to present on Veterans Day 2017 in King City its 20-member fully professional Wind Ensemble conducted and hosted by Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen, in a program of pops, patriotic, and Americana favorites.

Featured soloists include Narrator, Robert Walton, noted King City author; Monterey County Dance Theatre dancers, (Jan Harkness, Director); student instrumentalists of SOL-O, the Sol Treasures Orchesta, (Daphne Denny, Director); and Xylophone Soloist, Beverly Reese Dorcy.  All of these guest performers will be accompanied by the Monterey County Pops! Wind Ensemble.

The program will include American Pageant (a U.S. Marine Band commission that has been performed at every Presidential Inaugural since 1973), God Bless America, Hits of the Big-Band Era, movie music by Alan Silvestri, the traditional Mexican folk songs De Colores and Cielito Lindo, and a medley of highlights from the movie Frozen

Robert Walton, Narrator

Beverly Reese Dorcy, Xylophone Soloist

A very special treat on the program will be a performance on the Xylophone by long-time Monterey County Pops! timpanist, Beverly Reese Dorcy of The Golden Age of the Xylophone.  The instrument enjoyed a surge of popularity in America during the early 1900's as it was well suited to the percussive and lively music of the era.  The medley includes Shine on Harvest Moon, Bill Bailey, and Twelfth Street Rag.  Beverly, a Minnesota native, is an active freelance timpanist and percussionist in both the San Diego and San Francisco Bay areas. She has performed with the Marin Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, California Symphony, and San Francisco Golden Gate Park Band, among others, and toured Brazil performing with the San Francisco Women’s Philharmonic. She is in her 18th year with the Monterey County Pops.

Other titles to be performed include Light Cavalry Overture by von Suppé and Lord of the Dance" by Hardiman.

The concert will open with the presentation of the colors by a military color guard followed by the National Anthem.  Service veterans will be honored by the playing of the musical themes of each branch of the armed forces.

This and other free Pops performances are made possible by generous donations, sponsorships, and foundation grants.
