Monterey County Pops! will present a free Independence Day concert on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Golden State Theatre.
The 40-piece fully professional orchestra will present “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland, “American Salute by Morton Gould, themes from “Star Wars” by John Williams. “A Salute to the Big Bands” will feature “April in Paris”, “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Young musicians Tara Ragsdale-Cronin, harpist, and Anjela Abonico, vocalist, will perform as soloists with the orchestra in “Colors of the Wind” from the movie “Pocahontas.”
Violinist, Betty Corner, will perform the haunting “Ashokan Farewell” as featured in “The Civil War” documentary series.
Tom Delay will perform on the theatre’s mighty pipe-organ as the audience gathers.
The evening will conclude with a performance of the final portion of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” complete with digital church bells and cannons.
Many of the selections will be accompanied by videos created by local artist and musician, Robert Danziger. “Monterey’s Family Album: What We Share” is the theme of the videos that will accompany the music on the Golden State Theatre’s big screen.
Never before seen by the general public, high resolution versions of iconic Monterey County images have poured in for this once-in-a-lifetime, big screen showing. Early California and contemporary paintings by David Ligare, Armin Hansen, Jules Tavernier, Granville Redmond, Edgar Payne, August Gay, Warren Chang, Farrington Elwell, Jeanette Maxfield Lewis, and many others have been specially scanned to view on the giant screen, this one and only time, to be seen as they have never been seen before, and will likely never be again.
The Salinas Californian, Monterey Herald, Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Josh Hardy Gallery, David Ligare and Gary Smith, Paula and Terry Trotter Gallery, Chris Winfield Gallery, Weston gallery, Cal-State Monterey Bay, Tanimura and Antle, David Gordon’s “The Carmel Impresarios”, Bob Momand’s “Walk with Me”, Chip Hooper, Paul Kozal, Kenneth Parker, Cara Weston and other local photographers have all generously shared images of, and paintings about our community for this celebration.
And fireworks videos like you have never seen them before . . . From the Salinas Valley to Monterey, Santa Cruz to Big Sur we celebrate the things that bring us together as we celebrate our Nation’s birthday!
