Monterey County Pops! to offer THREE FREE performances at the Salinas Founders Day – 150th Anniversary of Salinas 1868-2018 celebration on April 14, 2018, at the Salinas Train Station (West Market Street) 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Monterey County Pops!, the area’s only provider of free-to-the-public professional concerts, is proud to support the 150th Anniversary of Salinas 1868-2018 celebration with the participation of its 20-member fully professional Wind Ensemble conducted and hosted by Music Director, Dr. Carl Christensen, in a program in the tradition of this Salinas City Band from 1899 ——
The one-hour performances will be presented at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. The setting will be very informal–outdoors with chairs for the audience but with people circulating.
The performances will include Americana favorites such as Shenandoah, Turkey in the Straw, and Clementine; Civil Wars songs such as Tenting Tonight, Yellow Rose of Texas, Aura Lee, Dixie, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The group will accompany La Rondalla de Alisal, and Hartnell College vocalists, Monica Mendoza and Jordan Jones who will sing Sweet Betsy from Pike, a Gold Rush song, and Oh Susanna by Stephen Foster.
Salinas students will lead the audience in square dancing to the Virginia Reel. The Man on the Flying Trapeze, published in 1868, as well as ragtime music of Scott Joplin and waltzes by Mexican composer Juventino Rosas (both born in 1868) will be featured.
Other local groups performing on the event’s Music Stage between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. include Asian Cultural Experience, Youth Orchestra of Salinas (YOSal), Ariel Theatrical, and La Rondalla de Alisal.
An Opening Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. It will include a Procession accompanied by period music, remarks by the Mayor and elected officials, presentation of awards, and the singing of My Country ‘Tis of Thee and the Star Spangled Banner by local vocalist Aleen Bradley.
This and other free Pops performances are made possible by generous donations, sponsorships, and foundation grants.
